Robert Dean Carter, the son of Lloyd and Lela (Bucknell) Carter, was born August 18, 1928 in Charles City. He attended school in Charles City, graduating from Charles City High School. Dean continued his education at the University of Northern Iowa receiving his teaching degree and a Master’s Degree from Colorado State. He was eager to get into the classroom with students so decided not to pursue his Ph.D.

Dean taught in Greeley for a short time before enlisting into the United States Marines. He proudly served his country stateside during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, Dean began his career teaching History in Cedar Falls for over 35 years. He would come back home to Charles City every day after teaching and continued helping his dad farm at night and on weekends. When his dad passed away in March of 1980, Dean stopped teaching and farmed full-time.

Dean loved to read and had a vast library to choose from. Two of his passions in life were teaching and spending time with his family. He would pick on his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and they would return the favor all in good fun. Dean also enjoyed his time on the farm and listening to the sounds of Big Band music. He was loved very much by his family, and will be dearly missed.

Living family members include his nephew, Jim (Pat) Carter; three nieces: Mary Jane (John) Cero, Jenny Wilcox and Kathy (Colin) Sandell; along with many great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Fay Wilcox; brother, Max Carter; and nephew, Doug Carter.
