Man drowns in Northern Iowa lake

EAST OKOBOJI LAKE – An Iowa man was reported missing Thursday at East Okoboji Lake, and was later found to have drowned.

On Thursday May 24th at around 1:06 AM, the Dickinson County Communications Center received a call of a missing person. The missing person was 71-year-old Wayne Krogman of Spirit Lake. Krogman had been fishing in waders near the spillway on the north end of East Okoboji Lake. Krogman’s wife became concerned when he did not return at his normal time. She then went to the fish hatchery where his truck was located and was unable to find him.

The Spirit Lake Police Department was first on scene to help locate Krogman.

The Spirit Lake Fire Department, Arnolds Park-Okoboji Dive Team, and Dickinson County Emergency Management was requested to assist. Multiple people were utilized in attempting to locate Krogman. The Dickinson County Emergency Management even used its drone.

Shortly after 4:00 AM, Krogman was located in the lake deceased. The family was then notified.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Spirit Lake Police Department, Arnolds Park-Okoboji Dive Team, Dickinson County Emergency Management, Iowa DNR, and the Lakes Regional Ambulance.
