Carr was born January 18, 1930, with a twin, Keith, sons of Gladys and Howard Carr, in the Bunns Woods, north of Carrville. It was living there that his mother pointed out the North Star to him. He had a lifetime interest in the nighttime sky. Carr attended country schools at Carrville and Powersville and graduated from Charles City High School in 1948. After high school, he farmed with his dad and went into the Army in 1952, serving with the 82nd airborne division, until 1954. He later graduated from Iowa State in 1961. This partnership lasted for 25 years until the death of Allen. Kenneth continued on 2 years before downsizing on his own to the remaining commercial properties. He continued on with his business until age 86, a year before living in the nursing home.

Carr was a longtime member of the Floyd Lions Club. He served on the Charles City School board for 9 years, where it was his great pleasure to hand all of his children their high school diplomas. He also served as Floyd County Democratic chairman for 4 years; as trustee for Floyd County Memorial Hospital for 9 years; and on the Floyd City Council for 8 years. He was very active in his children’s lives as a little league coach and 4-H leader.
