Basketball coach from Iowa accused of federal child porn crime

CEDAR RAPIDS – A man who has coached boys basketball in Iowa is accused of a federal child porn crime and is behind bars.

On February 22, 2018, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation obtained a state search warrant for the residences of Gregory Stephen, age 42, in Monticello and Delhi, Iowa. The search warrant affidavit states that a device had previously been obtained from Stephen’s Monticello residence and was examined by law enforcement agents. The affidavit states the device was found to contain video clips believed to depict young, non-adult disrobed male individuals. Based on the investigation, the male individuals do not appear to be aware they were being recorded.

As a result of these investigations, Gregory Stephen – a former Iowa AAU basketball coach for boys – has been charged with one count of knowingly transporting child pornography across state lines. The charge is contained in a Complaint filed today in United States District Court in Cedar Rapids.

If convicted, Stephen faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of twenty years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and at least five years of supervised release following any imprisonment.

Stephen appeared this week in federal court in Cedar Rapids and was held without bond. Stephen’s next appearance for a preliminary hearing and detention hearing is set for March 15, 2018.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Morfitt and was investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Monticello Police Department, the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
