Minnesota domestic abuser caught by police hiding in North Iowa victim’s closet, twice

ESTHERVILLE, IOWA – A Minnesota domestic abuser was caught by police hiding in his North Iowa victim’s closet, twice, and faces felony charges.

Early Tuesday Morning, January 2, 2018 Estherville, Iowa police officers responded to a 911 call where the communications operator reported people screaming in the background. Upon arrival at 702 North 8th Street, the victim answered the door and reported that the suspect was hiding in a closet in a bedroom. The victim also advised that there was a no-contact order between the suspect and the victim.

Officers confronted the suspect in the bedroom closet of the residence and placed him under arrest for Violation of the No-Contact Order. While speaking with the victim, it was disclosed that she had also been assaulted by the suspect.

The suspect, David Richard Hofmann, age 32 of Heron Lake, Minnesota was transported to the Law Enforcement Center and booked into the Emmet County Jail on charges of Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd Offense and Violation of a No-Contact Order. Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd Offense is a Class D Felony.
Hofmann was released from jail later that morning on an Unsecured Signature Bond of $5,000.

On Thursday Evening, January 4, 2018, Officers were alerted by a friend of the victim in the above case that the victim may be in danger again and requested that officers check on her well-being. Officers went to 702 North 8th Street to do the check. Officers entered the house and found that the suspect, Hofmann was again there and hiding in the bedroom. Hofmann was again taken into custody by officers and transported to the Law Enforcement Center. The victim reported that Hofmann broke into the house after being released from jail and assaulted her in front of their children for what felt like hours.
This time, Hofmann was charged with Domestic Assault 3rd Offense, Willful Injury, Burglary in the 1st Degree, 2 Counts of Child Endangerment, Violation of a No-Contact Order, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Hofmann remains in the Emmet County Jail on a bond of $50,000.
