CLEAR LAKE – An Iowa man wrote a big old bum check to a Clear Lake auto dealership, leading to his arrest on felony theft charges.
Clear Lake police tell NIT that on October 9, 2017, 47-year-old Kirk Fairchild of Council Bluffs, Iowa was arrested on a charge of felony C first-degree theft. The charge stems from an ongoing CLPD investigation beginning in September. Additional charges may be filed, police chief Pete Roth says.
Allegedly, on September 27, 2017, the CLPD took a report from a local car dealership of a theft of motor vehicle by check. The vehicle purchaser, Fairchild, allegedly wrote a personal check in the amount of $55,999.75, to the car dealership for a 2017 Ford Explorer on August 31, 2017. Bank statements indicated Fairchild had a negative balance in his checking account from July 2017, through September 20, 2017. The check was returned to the business stating the account was frozen.
CLPD worked with the Omaha Police Department to recover the Explorer on October 3, 2017.
