OTTAWA, ILLINOIS – A Mason City, Iowa man is behind bars in Illinois at this time, accused along with another defendant with choking a man to death in a fight.
Mason Thomas Shannon, age 42 of Mason City, was arrested in Mason City back on the evening of September 16. He was taken to the county jail in connection to an arrest warrant out of Lasalle county, Illinois for involuntary manslaughter. On Friday, September 22, Shannon was transported to Lasalle county and jailed on $50,000 bond.
The Ottawa Times reports that Shannon and a co-defendant, 21-year-old Joseph J. Brewer of rural Ottawa, caused the death of 32-year-old Michael C. Castello on July 20, 2017 “by putting him in a chokehold during a fight on the grounds of Bonnie Plants, a commercial plant grower just northeast of Ottawa.”
WSPY Radio reported that “LaSallle County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene at 11:53 PM that day, requesting emergency personnel in response to the physical altercation that occurred. Deputies and an ambulance were sent to the scene where Castelli was found unresponsive. Castelli was transported to OSF St. Elizabeth’s in Ottawa where he was later pronounced dead.”
The Times reports that if Shannon posts bond, he’ll be able to return to Iowa as court proceedings continue.
