North Iowa man flees police, tries to steal several ATV’s before caught and jailed

ALGONA – A North Iowa man fled from a traffic stop in Palo Alto county, crashed into rail road tracks and ran on foot before he attempted to steal from numerous citizens.

The incident began at 9:53 p.m. on September 15, 2017, when the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop on a Silver 2010 Dodge Caravan in the 5100 block of 525th Avenue (Highway 18). The vehicle did not yield to officer’s request to stop and a pursuit ensued. The suspect vehicle went into Cylinder and failed to negotiate a curve in town and proceeded eastbound on Parallel Street. The vehicle then entered the north ditch and eventually crossed Highway 18 and ended up in the south ditch striking the rail road tracks which caused the van to become stuck on the rail road tracks. A male subject was observed by officers exiting the van and fleeing to a nearby bean field. A Canine Unit from the Algona Police Department was called in to aid officers in searching for the fleeing subject.

At 11:19 p.m. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a call from 5399 390th Street Cylinder for a complaint of a male subject attempting to steal a four wheeler from the residence. Officers were still searching the area of the 5200 Block of 390th Street. The suspect fled the property before officers arrived. Another search of the area was conducted and the suspect was not located. Officers determined to end the search for the suspect and start notifying area residents to lock vehicles and buildings.

At 12:01 a.m. a Deputy was notifying residents at 3931 540th Street of the situation. The resident advised a four wheeler had been moved from its original location and vehicles on the property had been entered into.
At 2:55 a.m. the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from 3979 550th Avenue of a male subject attempting to take a four wheeler from the property. The resident advised the male subject fled the area on foot into a nearby field. Responding officers spotted the suspect walking on 400th Street. A deputy followed the suspect on foot to 5632 400th Street. The suspect was taken into custody at this residence at 4:05 a.m.

The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Blake Michael Gibson of Emmetsburg. The Sheriff’s Office discovered the van Gibson was operating had been stolen from Wickman Auto Sales in Emmetsburg. Gibson was charged with speeding, failure to have a valid driver’s license, failure to maintain control, reckless driving, interference with official acts, which are all simple misdemeanor. Gibson was also charged with eluding= a serious misdemeanor, two counts of burglary in the 3rd degree, and theft in the second degree, which are all Class D felonies. Gibson was held in the Palo Alto County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

Assisting the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office was the Iowa State Patrol, Algona Police Department, Kossuth County Sheriff’s Office, and the Emmetsburg Police Department.
