Drunk driver bashes car in Mason City, causes thousands in damages

MASON CITY – An alleged drunk driver received some on-the-job training from a woman three times convicted of the crime, and both went to jail after tangling with cops.

The incident occurred on the evening of September 3, 2017, just after 9 PM. Police received a report of a collision occurring at 6th Street SW and Federal Avenue. Police tell NIT that “the callers followed the vehicle to the 200 block of 4th Street SW.”

Officers arrived and encountered two women connected to the alleged hit-and-run incident – thrice-convicted drunk driver Shawna Marie Chaney of Dumont (a passenger in the car) and the driver, Samantha Rae Hardman of Ackley, both 38-years-old.

Chaney allegedly interfered with officers as they discovered her open container of booze and as she was being arrested. She was jailed, and soon thereafter, pled guilty to open container of alcohol and interference. She was ordered to pay a total of $727.50 in fines and court fees for her crimes. She was convicted in 2006 of drunk driving in Franklin county, and again in 2012 in Butler county for felony third-offense operating while intoxicated.

Hardman was arrested for going the wrong way on a one-way street, leaving the scene of an accident and operating while intoxicated. She’s due in court later.

Total damage to the vehicles was $7,000.
