Roosevelt Elementary School in Mason City, Iowa

MASON CITY – The Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health submitted the local Mason City Elementary Schools into a national Safe Routes to School contest, sponsored by the University of North Carolina’s Highway Safety Research Center, as a result of their participation in the upcoming Bike Rodeo event on May 13th. Mason City was one of ten lucky school districts in the U.S. to be awarded.

The winning schools receive 10 Schwinn SmartStart bikes and 20 Schwinn helmets. The bikes and helmets are planned to be given away at the annual Bike Rodeo event coming up this Saturday, May 13th at 9AM in the Mason City Police Department WEST parking lot.

“We are thrilled to have been chosen as a recipient of the bikes and helmets!” said Kelli Gerdes, Health Promotion Manager for the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health. “Our community is really focusing on bike-friendly roads and trails. Teaching our youth bike safety rules and etiquette is very important to the success of our efforts in encouraging healthy lifestyle habits.”

The Bike Rodeo will be held this Saturday, May 13th from 9AM-Noon at the Mason City Police Department WEST parking lot. This event is open to families. Please have your child bring their bike and helmet to participate. For more information on the Bike Rodeo, contact Kelli Gerdes at 641-421-9312.
