City of Mason City, Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities to celebrate community partnership and projects

MacNider Art Museum
MASON CITY – The City of Mason City and the University of Iowa’s Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities (IISC) invite the public to attend an open house highlighting sustainability and community development projects. During the 2016-17 academic year, UI students, faculty, and staff have worked with community partners from the city of Mason City on 11 projects that seek to enhance the city’s sustainability.

The open house is Wednesday, May 3, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Charles H. MacNider Museum (Salsbury Room) 303 Second St. SE. Posters for each project will be on display during the open house and students from some of the projects will be present to discuss their work and answer questions. The public is invited to attend at their convenience during that time.

Projects span a number of different disciplines, ranging from updating Mason City’s Comprehensive Plan, studying and marketing the public transit system, and engineering and design recommendations for the restoration of Fire Station #2.

The Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities (IISC) is a campus-wide, engaged learning program housed in the Provost’s Office of Outreach & Engagement at the University of Iowa. IISC pursues a dual mission of enhancing the sustainability of Iowa’s communities while transforming teaching and learning at the university. IISC has partnerships with the East Central Intergovernmental Association and the City of Mason City.
