Iowa meth dealer gets 20 years

BOONE, IOWA – An Iowa meth dealer has been sent to prison for 20 years after cops caught him in a hotel room with an unresponsive woman.

On April 17, 2017, a Boone County District Court Judge sentenced Ryan Davis Woods, 28, of Boone, Iowa, to 20 years in prison with the Iowa Department of Corrections. According to the sentence Ryan Davis Woods will have to serve a minimum of 80 months in prison before being eligible for parole. The sentencing is a result of a guilty plea to the court on his active case for Possession of Methamphetamine with the Intent to Distribute and a violation of probation.

According to the Complaint and Affidavit filed with the court, on December 6, 2016, officers with the City of Boone Police Department along with a Probation Officer from the Department of Corrections responded to a local hotel to check on a female that was reported to be unresponsive by the hotel staff. Upon arrival to the room, Ryan Davis Woods answered the door.

It was determined prior to entering that Ryan Woods was the person who rented the room. At the time Ryan Woods was on active probation. During the welfare check Ryan Woods produced a container that contained Methamphetamine from his sweat shirt pocket. Officers also noticed in the room packaging material and a digital scale which is typically used in the distribution of methamphetamine. The methamphetamine in the container weighed in excess of seven grams. Ryan Woods was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine with the Intent to Deliver.

On April 17, 2017, Ryan Woods pled guilty to Possession of Methamphetamine with the Intent to Deliver in violation of Iowa Code section 124.401. At the same hearing he admitted to violating probation on a C-Felony for Possession of Methamphetamine with the Intent to Deliver. The court ordered prison on both cases to run consecutive for a total of 20 years.

These charges carry a mandatory minimum of 80 months before he is eligible for parole. The judge imposed this mandatory minimum.

First Assistant Boone County Attorney, Matt Speers, tried the case on behalf of the State of Iowa for the prosecution. Ryan Woods was defended by a local attorney. The Boone Police Department investigated the case.
