MASON CITY – A man accused of multiple felonies in his criminal past – and due to be sentenced this week on his latest crime – was subdued by police after an alleged domestic assault.
Mason City police along with Cerro Gordo county deputies converged on a house located at 1306 North Madison Avenue Saturday night, April 15 at about 10:25 PM. Investigating an alleged domestic assault, police arrested 33-year-old John Michael Espinosa – who appears to live across the street at 1305 North Madison.
Espinosa was taken to jail and soon released. He was arrested by Mason City police back in October of 2016 for a felony burglary. Mason City Chief of Police Jeff Brinkley tells NIT that “John Espinosa was charged with burglary back on October 9, 2016, after he forced entry into an apartment and assaulted the resident, whom he knew prior to the incident.” Currently, Espinosa is due to be sentenced in connection to that crime on Tuesday, April 18, court records show, in a possible plea deal.
Espinosa has been charged with numerous crimes, many of which originated in Floyd county; many times the cases ended in plea deals to lesser charges.
Back in January of this year, Espinosa was involved in a standoff with Mason City police. Responding Mason City police officers soon identified the issue was coming from 1305 North Madison. “There was some type of dispute with approximately 4-5 people involved,” Mason City police told NIT at the time. Espinosa had a valid arrest warrant for second-degree burglary leading up to the incident. The situation soon turned into a standoff with a female subject remaining inside the residence. Eventually, the North Iowa Special Operations Group (SOG) were called out and later, the female exited the house unharmed. A short time later, Espinosa exited the house and surrendered to the SOG team. It’s not clear whether Espinosa was ever charged in connection to that incident.
