Olin Maage, 95, of Charles City, died Friday, April 14, 2017 at Cedar Health in Charles City with his family at his side.
Visitation will take place from 1:00 to 1:30 P.M. before the service at the graveside on Wednesday.
A graveside service for Olin will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at the Colfax Cemetery outside of Vincent, Iowa with Pastor Ruth Yeaton of First Baptist Church in Charles City officiating.
Olin James Maage was born May 5, 1921 in Polk County, Iowa to Ole and Jennie (Alexander) Maage. He was raised on the family farm near Thor, Iowa where he later graduated from Thor High School. On September 17, 1941 Olin married Dorothy Dencklau at Saint John Lutheran Church in Vincent, Iowa. To this union two children, Jerry and Sandra, were born.
From May 22, 1943 to December 31, 1945 Olin served his country as a Marine Sergeant where he was a member of the Marine Night Fighter Squadron 542 in Okinawa. Olin held many jobs during his lifetime, both before and after his military career, most of them in construction.
Perhaps the most notable of his jobs was as Superintendent for Collins Construction where he worked on the installation of satellite tracking stations. This job took Olin and Dorothy from Australia, to California, to Madrid, Spain. Dorothy passed away in February of 1982. Olin later married Dorothy Gurney in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and she passed away in 2001. In his younger days when Olin had his eyesight, he enjoyed fishing and being out on the water.
Olin is survived by his children: Sandra (Harlin) Hawkins, and Jerry (Jan) Maage; grandchildren: Greg (Allison) Neagle, Jamie (Gayleen) Maage, Todd (Jennifer) Neagle, Shellee Roghelia, Chris (Sara) Maage, Jenny (Dan) Crider, Debra (Darrin) Mitchell, Cindy (Chad) Smith, Tiffani (John) Seber, and Zane Hawkins; 22 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and four sisters-in-law.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and his sister: Lorraine Schlesselman.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in Olin’s name be directed to the VFW of the donor’s choice or First Baptist Church in Charles City.
