GRAETTINGER, IOWA – A young driver caused thousands of gallons of fertilizer to spill at a gas station in Palo Alto county, police say.

On April 11, 2017 at 1:33 PM, the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office investigated an incident in the 2800 block of 420th Avenue in Graettinger, Iowa. They found that a 1995 International straight truck driven by 19-year-old Marcus C. Rodriguez of Hartley and owned by Cooperative Farmers Elevator of Rock Valley, Iowa, was south bound in the at that location and pulled into the Pro Coop Gas Drive. As the vehicle did not have enough speed, Rodrigez clutched and braked, causing the liquid fertilizer to shift. This action cracked both front and back of the poly tank. Once cracked, all 3000 gallons of fertilizer spilled onto the road and ditch.

As a result, the roadway was closed for 6 hours to clean the road, for the removal of pooled fertilizer and excavation of soaked soil. Damage to the International was estimated at $4,000 dollars.

Assisting at the scene was the City of Graettinger Street Dept., Iowa Department of Transportation Highway Maintenance, Iowa Department of Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement and Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Rodriguez was cited for spilling load onto the roadway.

    Awe it was just an agriculture accident and people probably won’t die for another few years because of it. You have to learn to live with pollution of our state because half of our elected officials are farm related. Farmers only .com. and screw the rest. Ma ma knows best we took in over 5 billion dollars of your welfare tax money last year – thank you and don’t drink the water .
