MASON CITY – An auto crash claimed the lives of 5 people early Monday morning, and police are seeking clues to the identity of those inside the vehicle,
At about 2:40 a.m. Monday morning officers noticed a power outage west of downtown and began to search the area for a possible cause. At 2:42 a.m. an officer discovered a single vehicle crash in the 400 block of 6th Street S.W. The vehicle, a white 2007 Jeep Liberty, was on fire and was heavily damaged; none of the occupants were responsive. The fire department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.
There were five occupants in the vehicle and all were pronounced dead at the scene.
The department preliminarily believes that we have identified the driver of the vehicle but is not releasing any information at this time.
The remaining occupants have not been identified yet but the department is releasing a limited amount of information to try to identify them. There were two black males, a white male and white female in the vehicle, who remain unidentified.
Anyone that may have information about the identity of unidentified occupants or may have seen this vehicle prior to the crash should contact the Mason City Police Department.
*Correction: Police DO NOT believe anyone fled the scene. They merely are seeking help identifying the deceased persons inside the burned vehicle.
UPDATE:
The Mason City Police Department has identified all five occupants of the vehicle that was involved in the fatal crash early this morning.
The department will not release any names of the deceased until mid-morning on Tuesday, April 11th to allow the affected families to contact their loved ones.
This investigation is still ongoing and anyone with information about the crash should contact the Mason City Police Department.

I feel saddened for the families and friends who lost loved ones. 02-07 Jeep Liberty are known to be a hazard because of of their plastic fuel tank mounted behind the rear axle. Hopefully the families will seek restitution.

Words are the tools of the trade for a journalist. If they are not used with accuracy and precision, with fairness and integrity then the story is worthless. If your surgeon had a medical “typo” it would be malpractice. No excuse for sloppy reporting unless the story is for entertainment purposes only.
