MASON CITY – As many as 98,000 delicious chickens will be raised on a new confinement just north of Mason City.

The owner of the confinement is Wharam Creek Poultry, LLC, according to officials at the Cerro Gordo county courthouse. They have filed a new manure management plan (MMP) with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the county for an animal confinement (sometimes known as a “CAFO”) that would house 98,000 chickens.

Highway 65 and 310th Street

The state’s “master matrix” formulation that guides the legalities of animal confinements does not come into play with this new confinement, NIT is told, because the matrix only applies to confinements of 1,000 “head” or more.

“The way it is calculated, the confinement comes in at 980 animal units, which does not trigger a master matrix review,” a county official told NIT. “98,000 total chickens is the correct number, as stated in construction design statement. This variety of chicken has a .01 factor according to the table they used.”

This confinement will be located approximately 2 miles north of Mason City city limits on 310th Street, just west of US Highway 65 (NE1/4 of NE1/4 of Section 17, Lime Creek Township). According to the manure management plan that was submitted by Wharam Creek Poultry, LLC, the manure will be spread on the fields in proximity to the confinement site, approximately 303.8 acres.

“They are for slaughter,” the county official said.

Nearby landowners tell NIT that the confinement will actually be closer to 320th Street (slightly further north).

First of its kind ! A FLOATING CHICKEN FARM ! Oh well we have a floating casino up north – a pond of water and a watermill – what makes you think its not a floating casino ? Just how much chicken manure can we absorb before our brain is completely dead and we start voting for Kenyas for president — Mark my words IT could happen. Kummm BUY YOU little snowflake.

A chicken in every pot – Barraccck Huuusain Obummmer ! Wire tap the DNR and see if any foolish business is going on that I am not getting a cut from!

I spoke with one of the County Supervisors & was told they are looking at the resolution to the Governor’s office. It is going to take you the people to get involved. Contact them, Steckman & Ragan and any others you can think of.
The “matrix” as it is called, needs to be reviewed NOW!

Winnebago Heights will expand and be renamed Little Taco Terrace.

Sometimes I think the DNR is in it for the $$$$$ and not our best interests. Too close to a waterway and a flood plane area. Should never have been okayed .

Time for petitions -protests – and the enviromental truth – something that has been missing over the last 25/30 years. Will this be a Chinese owned company like Smithfield. – Don’t let foreigners ruin America for their profit and our dishonest politicans.

This stinky project is very close to a watershed (creek) if this is contaminated there goes our aquifer and drinking water – What the hell is the DNR thinking? Drive down I 35 – just south of hampton roll down your window – takes your breath away (turkey farms) just as bad as pig chit – More concerned about flooding in that area and poisoning our drinking water.. Cannot always trust a government body to say its okay – payoffs are a political normality.

You can thank the Gov and Republican legislature for their lack of proactive efforts addressing confinement practices. Get used to it its only gonna get worse, you will smell Rick Perry all over these issues.

The more reason our County officials should insist the Governor and Legislators to review this process.
I see many other Counties taking this approach. Shouldn’t we?

We have lived out here for a little over a year after living a couple blocks from Vicor in town and to tell you the truth it had been very refreshing to not smell any crap anymore. It looks like that will be changing. Don’t they have to get it approved by the local residents that this may effect before building it? Some much for our fresh air!!!

we need more of these in this county. let’s place a unit next to each of those bullies who belong to the anti-progress(prestage) group living here

Isnt that in the area were theres several tucked away houses worth more than most in town? I grew up out there, im pretty sure a few doctors still live in that area.

Stock piled poultry manure smells like “dead” .

Dam. The stench gona be sufficiently obnoxious. Ten. Bucks they cram way over 100,000 chickens in there. No one will check so why not.

Convenient that they know the rules and decide to build slightly smaller to go around the rules. What do you want to bet they fit over 100,000 chickens in there, who is going to count them to make sure they are in compliance?

Isn’t that the area that is always gets flooded?

The chick rights people had better get busy protesting this chickenshit.

That would be close to the guy that sells the sweet corn.

I feel sorry for the folks that live by this chicken shit facility, and most of you were worried about the hog kill plant. Just wait until they start dumping this chicken shit, It’s gonna smell up the whole county and most likely the ammonia smell and residue will kill just about everything around the area. People if you own property out that way have fun trying to sell it . Maybe the Wharams will buy you out. Good luck

WoW-the Chicken Rights flakes better get started.
