MASON CITY – One woman was shot this morning in Mason City, and a person of interest is being interviewed by police at this time.
At approximately 3:53 AM on Friday, December 2, 2016, Mason City Police were called to 116 17th Street SE on a report of a shooting incident. When officers arrived on scene, they found a female with a gunshot wound. She was transported to the hospital by the Mason City Fire Department.
Several persons were found at the scene. They are being interviewed by officers. The area is secure and the shooting incident was contained to the residence.
UPDATE, NOON FRIDAY: The victim in today’s shooting is a 19-year-old female from Mason City. Initially, she was transported to Mercy North Iowa for treatment. She has since been transported by Air Ambulance to Mayo, where she continues to be treated for life threatening injuries.
Larry Donnell Whaley, age 60, of Mason City, is being charged with Attempted Murder, a Class B Felony, in violation of Iowa Code. Whaley will be transported to the Cerro Gordo County Jail, where he will be held pending an initial appearance.

This scene is very near Lincoln Elementary and may affect school drop offs and bus routes this morning. Police would ask that parents plan to avoid 17th Street SE, if possible, on their way to drop off their children this morning.
