WASHINGTON, D.C. – It was announced today that President Obama has granted a new round of clemency to 79 men and women who were incarcerated for non-violent drug offenses, brining his total to over 1,000.

Eight of the 79 convicted criminals were sent to prison from crimes committed in Iowa.

A Justice Department official said “the number 1,000 is significant, but it’s important to remember that this is more than a statistic. There are 1,000 lives behind that number, 1,000 people who had been sentenced under unnecessarily harsh and outdated sentencing laws that sent them to prison for 20, 30, 40 years, even life, for nonviolent drug offenses.

jail“It’s part of my job to review the petitions for each of these individuals, and I’ve been struck by the common threads woven through many of them – lack of access to education or real economic opportunity, absence of parents, drug addiction, hopelessness. But in these petitions I’ve also seen something else – remarkable introspection, a real sense of responsibility for their conduct, and a dogged determination not to repeat the mistakes of the past and to ensure that they, and especially their children, chart another path.

“The President has given these 1,000 individuals that opportunity. And while we are a nation of laws, and those who violate those laws must be held accountable, we are also a nation of second chances. Since the initiative was announced in 2014, thousands of petitions have been submitted and reviewed by the hard working attorneys in the Office of the Pardon Attorney, my office, the Office of the Deputy Attorney General, and the White House to identify nonviolent drug offenders whose sentences would be significantly lower if they were sentenced today.”

Ya, I know what you mean.

Hundreds of people in NI get up every morning and check the obituaries to see if the stupid old coot is there.
Sadly not this morning , but there is always tomorrow.

Or maybe it is just the fact that you are a dumbass.
You do not know the difference between commutation and pardon

“commutation, the shortening of prison sentences without overturning a conviction, and the pardon, which is full legal forgiveness for an offense.”

Obama has the least amount of actual pardons of any President in recent history

Not really, every outgoing President has done the same thing, even the Republican Presidents.

Besides your statement being incorrect (https://www.justice.gov/pardon/clemency-statistics), think about the money that is being saved by releasing these non-violent offenders. And, hopefully, their rehabilitation will lead them to more productive, positive lives.

There is a difference between pardons and clemency as noted in someone’s earlier post. This site will lay it out much clearer for you so you can see for yourself. Borrow a calculator to add up the numbers. http://www.infoplease.com/us/government/presidential-pardons-1789-present.html

Every president has pardoned people at the end of their presidency but what obama has done is different, he has pardoned many many criminals from jail and gitmo before his presidency was over. Some of these released criminals have committed even more violent crimes or as in the terrorists, they have returned to the battlefield to kill more Americans.Defend him all you want but his actions have created more crimes than not.

I’ve provided you with sites that refute what you say but you refused to believe it. Can you point us to any facts to back up your statements? And Rush Limbaugh isn’t a credible source.

I have never watched Rush, don’t watch Fox. I get most of my info from Headline News which is pretty much a liberal channel so bite me. If you stick to these channels that suck the ass of any liberal naturally you will not get the real news.

Headline news doesn’t go into much detail. That why it is called headline news. I don’t consider what you ‘heard’ on the news as a reliable source either. Sorry.

Because prison industrial complex and corrupt laws resulted in the world’s highest prison population. Obama is correcting the injustice. He needs to pardon more, including expunging all files of non violent criminal records 7 years back. The criminal justice system holds files over our heads like an oppressive, abusive parent.
