AMES – The Iowa State women’s basketball team (4-0 overall) defeated Savannah State (2-2 overall) 74-51 on Tuesday night at Hilton Coliseum. Senior guard Seanna Johnson led the way with a game-high 16 points, eight boards and three assists.

Former Mason City Mohawk Jadda Buckley contributed 4 points, 7 assists and a steal in the victory.

A dominant opening stretch over the game’s first three minutes put the Cyclones in control with an 11-0 lead. Johnson and Meredith Burkhall scored four each in the spurt, and Iowa State locked down on the defensive end, holding the Lady Tigers without a field goal for the first 8:04 of game time. SSU trimmed the lead a bit in the closing minutes of the quarter, but Iowa State retained a 14-5 advantage after 10 minutes of action.

The Cyclone offense found its rhythm in the second quarter, scoring 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, led by sophomore Bridget Carleton with eight, while guard Jadda Buckley dished out four assists. Iowa State pushed its lead to as many as 25 with a spurt late in the half in which the Cyclones made 5-of-6 attempts from the field. As the teams headed to the locker room, Iowa State had taken a 37-12 advantage, led by 12 points and five rebounds from Johnson. Savannah State was held to 5-of-24 from the field, including 1-of-9 from 3-point range.

A cold shooting stretch hindered Iowa State after the intermission, so the Cyclones found ways to get to the free throw line instead. Opening the third quarter 2-of-13 from the field, Bill Fennelly’s squad still went a perfect 12-for-12 from the charity stripe and extended its lead to 61-29 after three quarters. Nine different Cyclones scored in the period.

The Iowa State bench played nearly the entire fourth quarter, as 11 different Cyclones logged double-digit minutes in the game, and 10 players got into the scoring column.

The Cyclone Player of the Game is Seanna Johnson. The senior guard put up 16 points and pulled down eight boards in the win. The Brooklyn Park, Minnesota native, was an efficient 4-of-7 from the field, knocked down 7-of-9 free throw attempts and also chipped in three assists in 25 minutes of action.
