Mason City woman avoids harsher sentence in plea deal for drunk driving

MASON CITY – A Mason City woman who was caught drunk driving for a second time, even as she is still paying fines from her first offense, was able to avoid a harsher sentence after a plea deal.

A Cerro Gordo deputy stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation Monday morning, April 4 around 1:44 AM at the 1500 block of North Federal Avenue. After an investigation, the deputy arrested 52-year-old Dawn Marie Ackerman on a charge of second-offense operating while intoxicated. She was taken to the county jail booked, and soon released, pending a court date. Ackerman was arrested back in 2011, again by a Cerro Gordo deputy and pleaded guilty to first offense operating while intoxicated.

After her arrest this year, Ackerman was charged with second offense operating while intoxicated. However, Ackerman was able to work a plea deal to only first offense operating while intoxicated. She was ordered to pay $1,807.50 in fines and court fees and sent to jail for two days.

Court records show she still owes $993.05 in fines and court fees from her 2011 drunk driving case.
