Des Moines man sent to prison for up to 50 years for killing former Charles City man

DES MOINES – A Des Moines man will spend up to 50 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and sentencing in the shooting death of a former Charles City man.

The Des Moines Police Communications Center received a call at 5:09 PM on Sunday, March 1, 2016, concerning a possible homicide at 321 E. Diehl Avenue in Des Moines. Des Moines Patrol Officers responded and while en route to that location they were informed that the suspect was inside the residence of 325 E. Diehl.

Officers first checked the 321 E. Diehl address and found a 35-year-old male victim inside the residence dead from gunshot wounds. A short time later, police dispatchers were able to make contact, by phone, with the 30-year-old male suspect. He surrendered peacefully to officers on scene and was taken to the Des Moines Police Department for questioning by detectives who responded to assist.

The victim of the shooting was identified as Mark Edward Hruska, formerly of Charles City. He was shot and killed by Patrick William Kirwan who has been booked into the Polk County Jail charged with murder in the first degree.  Mr. Hruska was born in Charles City and attended school there, graduating from High School in 1998.

On April 14, a jury found Patrick William Kiran guilty of second degree murder. According to prosecutors, Kiran believed Hruska was involved with his girlfriend. Kiran faces up to 50 years in prison.

Kiran was sentenced on Friday, June 3 to up to 50 years in prison. He was immediately sent to prison to begin serving his sentence.

Omg my great aunt and uncle lived in that house many years! Had no idea it was part of a crime scene!

He kills the guy on March 1, 2016. Goes to trial and is found guilty on April 14 and on Friday, June 3, he gets up to fifty years in prison.

SOB…..that’s some fast justice. I didn’t know the wheels of government could turn that fast.

Wow, one man dead and another in prison for 50 years all over a girl! No girl is worth that especially one that is cheating on you. Just my opinion.
