CLEAR LAKE – A Garner woman who stood accused of stealing thousands of dollars from at least 15 disabled residents at Opportunity Village in Clear Lake while she worked there has been given probation along with a deferred judgement.
Amy Palmer, age 41, was charged by Clear Lake police on November 24, 2015 with 15 counts of felony D dependent adult abuse and one count of felony B ongoing criminal conduct. She was arrested the next day on a warrant by a Cerro Gordo deputy, taken to jail and held on $50,000.00 bond, which she posted a few days later.
Allegedly, Palmer worked at Opportunity Village between 2014 and 2015 and stole $8,782.34 from the bank accounts of her victims – persons she was hired to care for. She allegedly tried to hide her deeds by altering records.
On January 13, Palmer and her attorney, Timothy Lapointe, entered a not guilty plea.
Earlier this year, Palmer entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors.
She pleaded guilty to felony second-degree theft as part of a deferred judgement and the rest of the charges against her were dismissed.
Palmer must serve 3 years of probation, pay $2,335 in fines, fees and restitution, submit a DNA sample and undergo mental health treatment.

That’s disgusting . This woman got off to easy. I remember seeing her around there when I used to volunteer there and I never suspected that she would have ever done something like that. Seriously what a low scummy person who steals money from people who can’t speak up or protect themselves. Just because they are disabled DOES NOT mean people like that can steal from them period! You would have to be a pretty sick twisted person who is mentally ill and challenged themselves. She probably steals from her own mother and father and in-laws as well. I hope that someone steals money from her one day so she knows what it feels lIke to be taken advantage of. The people at the village are super nice and waking up everyday to know that they have to go to work or go to an activity makes them feel like they have purpose in life and they get really excited to do the simple things in life that people who are “normal” take granted for. They still feel pain like you and I do, they cry the same tears that we do, and they definitely bleed the same color of blood that we do as well. I wonder what she was thinking as she stole money from underneath their noses? She probably didn’t even feel guilty. I would love to call her all sorts of names but there’s no point she is still and will be the pathetic woman she is.
