NIACC’s Nascarenas places third at nationals

niacc_trojans_logoCOUNCIL BLUFFS – NIACC sophomore Paul Mascarenas topped Ellsworth’s Blake Walker 3-2 to place third at 125 pounds at the NJCAA national wrestling championships Saturday afternoon.

Mascarenas moved to the third-place match with a a 5-3 win over Northeast Oklahoma A&M’s Logan Terrill and a 9-0 major decision over Highline’s Andrea Tereza.

Mascarenas became NIACC’s 12th two-time all-American as he placed sixth a year ago at 125 pounds.

Heading into Saturday night’s finals, NIACC is in fifth place with 86.5 points.

NIACC’s Shiquan Hall, who will wrestle in the finals at 133 pounds tonight, will be the school’s 13th two-time all-American as he was fourth last year at 133 pounds.

Mascarenas (19-7) compiled a career record of 43-20 with seven falls, 2 technical falls and seven major decisions.

NIACC’s Quincy Kalkbrenner (18-8) placed fifth with a 17-0 technical fall over Niagara’s Zach Colgan in his fifth-place match. Kalkbrenner compiled a record of 36-19 at NIACC with 10 falls, five technical falls and six major decisions.

NIACC’s Kyler Mathews (9-8) placed seventh at 197 pounds with an 8-4 win over Northeast Oklahoma A&M’s second-ranked Josh Latham. Mathews compiled a career record of 21-21 with 10 falls, two technical falls and three major decisions.

NIACC’s Mario Pena (21-10) placed fourth at 285 pounds after falling to Ellsworth’s Dalonte Holland 5-2 in the third-place match,
