NIACC advances three to Saturday’s semifinals

niacc_trojans_logoCOUNCIL BLUFFS – The NIACC wrestling team advanced three wrestlers to Saturday’s semifinals at the NJCAA national wrestling tournament at the Mid-America Center on Friday.

NIACC, which is in fifth place with 63.5 points, also advanced two wrestlers through the consolation round Friday night so are guaranteed five all-Americans for the second straight year.

Northeast Oklahoma A&M leads the team standings with 83.5 points. Iowa Central is in second with 78 points, Iowa Western is in third with 69.5 points and Ellsworth is in fourth with 68.5 points.

NIACC’s sophomore 133-pounder Shiquan Hall (13-4) upset top-ranked Kyle McGregor of Niagara 5-2 in Friday night’s quarterfinals.

Hall, who is ranked third, faces Northwest Wyoming’s Eduardo Penha, who is ranked seventh, in the semifinals Saturday morning.

Also for the Trojans, seventh-ranked Quincy Kalkbrenner (17-6) advanced to the semifinals with an 10-2 major decision over Northwest Wyoming’s Cameron Braden and 285-pounder Mario Pena (20-8) knocked off seventh-ranked Jenard Rosemond of Nassau 3-2 in overtime to move to the semifinals.

Kalkbrenner faces sixth-ranked Dawaylon Barnes of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in the semfinals on Saturday morning.

Pena will face Iowa Lakes’ fourth-ranked Guy Henson in the semifinals Saturday morning. Henson edged Pena 5-3 in a dual meet in Estherville on Jan. 27.

Paul Mascarenas (125) and Kyler Mathews (197) stayed alive in the consolation round Friday night to earn all-American honors. Both Mascarenas and Mathews can place as high as third.

NIACC, which placed third at the national meet a year ago, had five all-Americans last season, including national champions in Nosomy Pozo and Yoanse Mejias. Since the 2011 season, NIACC has had at least three all-Americans.

In the 125-pound quarterfinals, Western Wyoming’s third-ranked Cole Verner nipped NIACC’s Paul Mascarenas 4-3.

In the 141-pound quarterfinals, Southwest Oregon’s top-ranked Brayden Akeo edged NIACC’s Taylor Lehman 3-1.

In the 197-pound quarterfinals, top-ranked John Morin of Clackamas stopped NIACC’s Kyler Mathews 9-3.

In the 125-pound consolation round, Mascarenas (16-7) moved into Saturday’s all-American round with a 5-4 victory over sixth-ranked Damian Short of Muskegon.

Mascarenas is guaranteed to be a two-time all-American as he placed sixth last year at 125 pounds.

Mascarenas faces Northeast Oklahoma A&M’s Logan Terrill in the consolation round on Saturday morning.

In the 197-pound consolation round, Mathews (8-7) pinned Ellsworth’s Atavion Oliver in 5:36 to move to Saturday’s all-American round.

Mathews faces Southwest Oregon’s Anthony Whitemarsh in the consolation round Saturday morning.
