ROCKWELL, IOWA – Details were still unfolding this morning as a fire erupted at a school in Rockwell.
The fire was discovered sometime around 7 AM at the Sacred Heart School, at 305 Elm Street. According to the Cerro Gordo county sheriff’s office, numerous Fire Departments responded to assist Rockwell Fire Department. Deputies provided traffic control at scene.
Heavy smoke and fire appeared to cause serious damage to the school.
Calls to the church, school and to officials understandably were not answered yet this morning. A local person familiar with the school tells NIT that the school is a “very nice building with many recent updates. Housed elementary kids (since) I believe 1973. Still very busy with religious ed classes, weddings, funerals, etc.”
NIT will report more information when it becomes available. According to a source, the school is a “total loss, Rockwell, Sheffield, Mason City (hook & Latter) all there.”
