WEBSTER CITY – An SUV rolled several times as it exited a busy 4-lane roadway near Webster City, killing two and sending five persons to hospitals.
According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, just before midnight Monday night, 19-year-old Richard Elmore of Hopkins, South Carolina, was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer westbound on Highway 20 near exit 140 when the vehicle left the roadway on the exit ramp. Elmore lost control and the SUV rolled several times.
A passenger, 22-year-old Shelly Coenen of Tomah, Wisconsin, was ejected from the vehicle. She was later pronounced dead at the scene. Elmore was taken by ambulance from the scene but also later pronounced dead.
Injured in the accident was a 13-year-old runaway, child, the state patrol said, with non-life-threatening injuries.
Additionally, 4 teens between the ages of 16-18 were hurt. They were all transported by ambulance or life flight to various regional hospitals with undisclosed injuries.
