Iowa dismantles Northwestern, 40-10

logo_iowa_hawkeyesEVANSTON, ILLINOIS – An Iowa Hawkeye football team that is routinely challenged by the Northwestern Wildcats came up big in a road victory today at Ryan Field, winning easily 40-10.

Iowa (7-0, 3-0) defeated Northwestern (5-2, 1-2), 40-10, Saturday. The Hawkeyes are 7-0 for the first time since 2009, the second time under Kirk Ferentz, and the fifth time in school history. Iowa started 9-0 in 2009, its best start in school history. The Hawkeyes were 7-0 in 1985, 1922, and 1921.

Iowa has two roads wins over ranked opponents for the first time since 2002 (at #12 Penn State, 42-35; at #8 Michigan, 34-9).

Iowa is 3-0 in the Big Ten for the third time under Kirk Ferentz. Iowa opened 3-0 in the Big Ten in 2009 (5-0) and 2002 (8-0).

Iowa won at Northwestern for the first time since 2007 (28-17). The Hawkeyes have won four of the last five meetings overall.

Northwestern entered the game with the conference’s second best rush offense (213 ypg). Iowa held the Wildcats to 51 rushing yards, including just 15 in the second half. Northwestern managed just 80 yards of offense in the second half.

Northwestern entered the game with the second best scoring defense in the conference (12.2 ppg). The 40 points are the most allowed by Northwestern this season.

Iowa scored at least 40 points for the second time this season (62 vs. North Texas). The last time Iowa scored at least 40 points in a Big Ten road game was against Minnesota in 2008 (55-0).

Iowa was plus-two in turnovers today and is plus-seven on the season. Iowa has 15 takeaways this season, and turned them into 57 points. CB Desmond King had an interception today, DT Jaleel Johnson recovered a fumble, and Parker Hesse recovered a fumble. The fumble recoveries were the first of their careers for Johnson and Hesse.

Iowa had a running back rush for 200 yards for the second time this season (Akrum Wadley at Illinois, Jordan Canzeri vs. North Texas). It is the first time in school history two different running backs rushed for 200 yards in the same season. RB Tavian Banks rushed for 200 yards in consecutive games in 1997 (vs. Northern Iowa, vs. Tulsa).

QB C.J. Beathard is 8-0 as Iowa’s starting quarterback, a record that includes a 4-0 mark on the road, a 4-0 mark at home, and a 4-0 mark in the Big Ten. Numbers include 131-of-224 passing for 1,660 yards, 10 touchdowns, and four interceptions, and 223 yards rushing with three rushing touchdowns. He is the first quarterback in school history to win his first eight career starts.

RB Akrum Wadley recorded career highs in carries (26), yards (204) and touchdowns (4). In two career games against Northwestern, Wadley has 41 carries, 310 yards, and five touchdowns. In 10 games against all other teams, Wadley has 25 carries, 115 yards, and one touchdown. He is the first player this season to rush for 100 yards against Northwestern.

RB Akrum Wadley rushed for four touchdowns today, tying the single-game school record. It is the seventh time in school history an Iowa player has rushed for four touchdowns in a single game, most recently by RB Jordan Canzeri earlier this season against North Texas. Wadley entered the game with two career rushing touchdowns.

Iowa has had two players score four rushing touchdowns in a single game this season (Wadley, Canzeri). It is the first time in school history two different players have rushed for four touchdowns in a single game in the same season. RB Tavian Banks scored four rushing touchdowns in a single game twice in 1997.

OT James Daniels started the game at left guard. He is the third true freshman to start on the offensive since 1999. Bryan Bulaga started the final five games of 2005 at left guard. Mike Jones started the final seven games of 2003 at left guard. Iowa’s starting offensive line today: LT Cole Croston, LG James Daniels, C Austin Blythe, RG Jordan Walsh, RT Sean Welsh.

WR Tevaun Smith played for the first time since Week 4 against North Texas. He did not have a catch.

DB Desmond King recorded an interception on Northwestern’s opening possession. King has a Big Ten high six interceptions this season. He is the first Hawkeye with six interceptions in a single season since Tyler Sash led the league with six in 2009.

LB Jack Hockaday played today. He is the fourth true freshman to see action this season: OL James Daniels, WR Jerminic Smith, and WR Adrian Falconer.

RB Jordan Canzeri left the game with 3:05 left in the first quarter and did not return. He caught one pass for 19 yards. He has 10 straight games with reception.

RB Derrick Mitchell recorded career bests in carries (10), rushing yards (79), receptions (3) and receiving yards (43). Mitchell also scored his first career touchdown, a 13-yard rush in the fourth quarter.

LB Cole Fisher recorded a team high 10 tackles. Fisher has been Iowa’s leading tackler five times this season.

PK Marshall Koehn scored 11 points today, including five PATs and two field goals (36, 22). Koehn has 130 career points, 21st all-time.


Iowa now has more rushing yards than passing yards on the season.

Northwestern won the toss and deferred to the second half. Iowa received the opening kickoff in six of seven games this season (Wisconsin), and has outscored its opponents 36-13 in the first quarter. In 17 seasons as Iowa’s head coach, Kirk Ferentz and the Hawkeyes received the opening kickoff in 168-of-207 games (101-67). Iowa has started the game on defense in 39-of-207 games under Ferentz (21-18).

Head coach Kirk Ferentz has 122 wins as a member of the Big Ten Conference, tying Lloyd Carr for eighth all-time (122). Ferentz has 71 Big Ten wins, the ninth most by a head coach in the history of the conference.
