NIACC men’s golf team places fifth at regional preview tournament

niacc_trojans_logoPANORA – The NIACC men’s golf team placed fifth at the NJCAA Region XI fall preview tournament with a 322-345 – 667 on Monday.

Sophomore Sam Steinwand led the Trojans with a 76-84 – 160, which was tied for 14th in the individual medalist competition at the Lake Panorama National Golf Course.

“We’ve had a pretty solid fall season overall, but this weekend was pretty disappointing for us,” NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. “We just didn’t play well.

“However, we need to build off the positives throughout the fall season as a whole and work to get better for the spring season. We are a much better team than we showed this weekend and that gives us the encouragement to work hard during the off season and take care of business.”

Also for NIACC, Zach Nicholson shot 79-88 – 167; Spencer Davidson shot 83-87 – 170; Kenton Waters shot 85-86 – 171 and Brandon Nordman shot 84-89 – 173.

“I was pleased with how Sam Steinwand and Zach Nicholson performed on Day 1,” Frenz said, “but I think all of them took a beating mentally on Day 2 with extremely windy conditions and just tough overall scoring conditions.

“However, you have to find a way to battle through that. Scoring was there as some players proved, but you really have to battle all 18 holes and not let down after something goes wrong on a hole or two.”
