MASON CITY – A woman may have accelerated when she intended to stop Thursday afternoon, hurtling her Blazer SUV into the side of the Dollar General store in downtown Mason City.
The incident occurred minutes before 3:30 PM at Dollar General at the 300 block of North Federal. A woman appeared to be hurt, as she sat inside the vehicle holding her head in her hands. Police and emergency responders milled around in the parking lot, checking on her and chatting amongst themselves. She finally exited the vehicle, still lodged against the south wall in the parking lot, facing a huge crack in the wall. People walked into the lot to get a better view of the damage.
A bystander who says she witnessed the incident told NIT that the woman who caused the crash accelerated instead of hitting the brake, sending her SUV into the wall. It did not appear that the woman was transported by ambulance, immediately.
Inside the store, goods and items normally sitting on the south wall shelves were spread onto the floor, and employees attempted to grasp what was going on.
More to come on this developing story.
