MASON CITY – A couple who were involved in a car rollover accident north of Mason City fled the scene as concerned citizens searched for them, leading to the arrest of the driver.
According to Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Kevin Pals, on July 6, 2015 at approximately 4:04 PM, deputies responded to a call of a single vehicle rollover on Highway 65 northbound lanes, approximately 3/10’s of a mile south of 300th Street (B20). A northbound 2010 Ford Fusion, driven by Brittani Hickey, age 24 of rural Mason City, lost control of her vehicle entering the east ditch striking a private drive causing the vehicle to go airbound and roll several times before coming to rest against a tree.
Driver and passenger, Codi Beier, age 27, Mason City, fled the scene. Concerned citizens stopped to help search for the then-unknown occupants of the vehicle; some said they were hiding.
“My husband and I were the first on the scene very scary seeing a car like this and not able to find anyone,” a Mason City woman said. “Then to find out they were hiding really upset all of us that tried to pull over and help.”
Both Hickey and Beier were located a short time later and returned to the scene where they were checked and signed off on minor injuries by Mason City medics.
Hickey was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to maintain control.
The Sheriff’s office was assisted by Mason City Fire Medics and Mason City Police Department.
