Joe Yavorski presents his plan for a trash-to-energy plant to the North Iowa Landfill in 2011.

NIT – As it turns out, Joe Yavorski never got his trash-to-energy plant built in Colorado, just as it never got built here in Mason City.

You remember Joe Yavorski. The CEO of Creative Energy Systems (CES), which came within an eyelash of getting enough approval from the North Iowa Landfill Board to get his first trash-to-energy plant built, back in 2012. However, after losing that very close battle in North Iowa, he moved on and attempted to build a similar plant in Fort Morgan, Colorado.

NIT continued to follow the progress of CES and Yavorski in their endeavor to build the state-of-the-art plant.  You will recall, he had a deal with Alliant Energy to transport the energy the plant created (using a technology called pyrolysis), was set to acquire land on the south side of town near the Golden Grain Energy plant, was obtaining permits, and just needed a positive vote from the North Iowa Landfill to move forward.  A narrow defeat by that board was enough for Yavorski to move on.

In Colorado, Yavorski came just as close as he did in Mason City, but alas, the plant never got built.

According to a source in Fort Morgan, Colorado, who confided in NIT with details on how that deal went down, it was a very close call.

“All our local governments were on board,” the source explained. “It was just one guy at the power company that killed it.”

Just like in North Iowa, one faulty link in the chain scuttled the deal for CES.  Here, it was the landfill board.  Out west, a hiccup with cooperation between CES and an energy company.

“That whole situation was contingent on (CES) being able to contract with a power company for transmission of the energy. That appears to have fallen through, taking the proposed plant with it.”

EDITOR’S NOTES:

1) NIT reported in January 2013 that the Fort Morgan deal was still in the works.  That story also explained how a deal in Green Bay, Wisconsin went sour.

2) An odd twist during Yavorski’s escapade in North Iowa was a report written by the Globe Gazette touting what they called a partnership between CES and Lockheed Martin on a $2 billion project in Antarctica.  Their story came out just weeks before the North Iowa Landfill was to conduct its fateful vote on the plant.  Some say this Globe Gazette story was an attempt to influence the landfill vote in favor of CES – and its backers in city hall.

A smug Eric Bookmeyer waits for his victory at a North Iowa Landfill Board meeting last year. That victory never came.

A smug Eric Bookmeyer waits for his victory at a North Iowa Landfill Board meeting in 2012. That victory never came.

Thanks to this January 2nd, 2012 story in the Globe Gazette trumpeting this partnership (weeks prior to the ill-fated vote at the landfill) countless other media publications ran with the story and announced that Yavorski’s CES would be working in Antarctica with Lockheed on this major project.  The Globe Gazette seemed to base their January 2nd story only on an interview with Yavorski.  It now appears the Globe Gazette pulled the January 2nd story from their website.  On January 4th, 2012, the Globe wrote what was essentially a retraction, coming clean and writing that Yavorski was actually still negotiating with Lockheed to be a part of the Antarctica project and nothing was final.

NIT noticed both stories the Globe Gazette published and the different tales each told, prompting us to reach out to Lockheed Martin for the truth.  NIT was able to speak with Lindsay Wilson – a Senior Communications Representative at Lockheed Martin for over 5 years – and ask her to confirm any involvement between CES and Lockheed Martin in the Antarctica project.  Wilson looked into the matter and returned a call to the NIT newsroom.  She confirmed that in the end, CES had absolutely no involvement with Lockheed’s Antarctica project.

This fiasco was the one that really turned me against the Bookmeyer crew. They ignored the people who were knowledgeable about the subject and were opposed to it. Bookmeyer even had his city planner taken off the committee exploring this because she found too many ecological reasons the plant might have problems. Eventually, she resigned her position probably because of Bookmeyer’s vitriolic retaliation for going against him.

Great article. Sweet follow up with the aviation giant. Doesn’t Ames Iowa burn their trash to convert to steam? The type of pyrolysis CES was after involves burning plastic and used tires which are high sulfur content to convert to biodiesal. It would have burned livestock waste as well. Faces numerous environmental roadblocks. Sorting and recycling are better investments…which was part of my campaign proposal to hire city junk sorters.

It sounds like they guy was running a con job and the administration was fool enough to fall for it. Old adage is, if it sounds to good to be true it probably is.

@LVS…Yavorski should move to Las Vegas. I understand there’s a job opening at a convenience store selling gas, roller dogs and rubbers. Sounds like the last slug that tried to work there wasn’t qualified and was fired.

Do you see why you’re guilty of spreading misinformation and lies? I wasn’t fired, I quit. And I was over qualified. In the short time there I completely organized and sorted the beer and drinks coolers. I am a professional organizer with a very sharp mind for ergonomics and work flow. Their system was simply inefficient and was costing time on the restock. They’ll remember what I did for them, and the feedback I gave to corporate.

Sorted the beer and drink coolers. Wow! Must take a master’s degree to know how to do that! Now, go away Peter. Don’t you have some poop to try to sell?

I don’t like you Phili. I don’t care for your “I’m better than everyone” attitude. You think you are above everyone and constantly put others down. You say you hate North Iowans, yet you are constantly on this site pestering us North Iowans. You keep saying you are leaving NIT, but you never leave. And, quite frankly, I’m tired of hearing about your poop and your poop machine. I enjoy this site, but I don’t care for your banter one bit. I wish you would stay away.

All of your personal issues you discuss usually have absolutely nothing to do with anything on here. If you want to talk about yourself, and your personal life, keep it on facebook where it belongs. We don’t care on here. No one else shares our personal stuff here. It’s not the proper forum for such topics. This is NOT your site. This is a news site. It’s the happenings in the community that I live in. You don’t live here. And no one cares about what you’re doing in Las Vegas.

All life is relevant and connected. Your isolation desires aren’t realistic. My exodus from NI tells a story to why NI sucks as bad as it does. Plus, it’s personal with me. The decrepit wasteland of NI took the life of one of my own, and ignoramuses like LVS, yourself and Maybe hold the key why the jury set the killer free. I also will be inheriting property there and need to keep track of the state of affairs in the region.

And more than likely, your main reason for that burning inner hatred of me is because i told the truth about loud, illegal exhaust systems, and how local law enforcement turned a deaf ear. It’s been eating at you from day one. You lose sleep. You’re female. I remember you from the anti-loud pipe meeting i held.

Most people have never personally been affected by Muslims, yet gleefully they cheer on the bombing of Muslim lands, disregarding innocents killed as an inevitable byproduct of war. Yet i do know someone who was killed right in River City, because i was related to him. So who are the real terrorists to me? Muslims or North Iowans? And when your general population and authorities protect the killer(s) it cannot be interpreted any other way. To me, you’re a terrorist.

You could at least try to tell the truth for once. Your child was killed by your negligence and irresponsibility. You killed him with your drug habit and low life style. Don’t put the blame on us because you are you are a irresponsible dope head.

My child was killed by the offspring of upper crust North Iowa Catholic socialites…firmly respected and entrenched within the community of Mason City. They spent vast amounts of money on high priced Des Moines and local attorneys. I was 1100 miles away. Your inbred, religilous general population sent me a big message by setting the killer free. Then, they came after me with a smear campaign trying to discredit my mental status and paint me just as you do. Ur terrorists to me.

Ur small minded, white is right, one man + one woman, prejudiced, superstitious, bigoted, homophobic, nationalist, militaristic, abusive, myopic, hypocritical, religilous, easily-led, nasty corn fed, buffet eating, pig killing, dream-crushing, children of the corn terrorists to me and everyone else who doesn’t fit in your homogenized, conformed mold. Dangerous to life, as you’ve proven you won’t catch nor punish murderers. Asteroid should hit any day now if God listens to prayers

They didn’t have to smear you because it was your responsibility and your fault all the way. You can deny it all you want because you make up crap in your brain dead head. You were so stoned you don’t even know what happened but I remember the reports very well. It was the same as if you had killed that child. Of course you are going to deny it but the truth is the truth. I guess that car missed you last night but today is another day. We are all hoping.

More poignantly, my child was killed by the violent culture that exists in the violent community known as Mason City. Me and my friends were artists and people of peace who were constantly harassed and belittled by the mainstream thugs whom your general population raised and supported. The low life style comes from your sick and decrepit community, the ones who attend church on Sundays, and abuse everyone else Monday thru Saturday. Your children’s actions tell the truth.

At last it finally dawned on me why some of you relentless attack me here on NIT. LVS, I could kiss you! Thanks for finally jarring it loose. You are supporters and friends of the family who’s son killed my child. And yours is the continuation of the smear campaign initiated against me by local authorities, on behalf of the family of the former drug town manager. How did it take me this long to figure this out? Wow. Now the real question is whether NIT mgmt is on board as well?

That’s what makes you people so despicable. Rather than own up to the truth that one of your own turned into a nasty baby killer, you’ll spend the rest of your lives trying to attack an innocent man who had nothing to do with the murder, and only wants to see justice for his deceased baby, by doing everything in your power to paint me as some lunatic, undesirable, low life, to lessen the impact on the murder that was committed. You did the same to my uncle about the mall.

My uncle led the fight against the Mall way back in the late 70’s when it was conceived. The authority structure of Mason City spent their time trying to crush and discredit him. He was right, but no one listened to him, just as I am right today and no one listens to me. I’m proud to come from a family of non-conformists who aren’t easily duped. We’ve been right and this community has been wrong. And your white bread Germanic egos won’t allow you to admit when you’ve been wrong.

You were responsible for that childs death and should be in jail for the rest of your life. At least you have a life, that is a hell of a lot more than that poor baby has. People like you should have their head pinched off at birth.

Congratulations as your name has become synonymous with the world’s most hideous, and malevolent creatures. Unfortunately God’s garden contains a wide array spanning factory ogres such as yourself to ultra beautiful and refined. If you didn’t kiss Matt’s ass so much on NIT, you’d be THE most despised on here.
