Cyclone wrestlers 11th at Southern Shuffle

logo_iowa_state_cyclonesCHATTANOOGA, Tennessee – The Iowa State wrestling team (4-1 , 0-0 Big 12) kicked off the New Year with the 12th annual Sothern Scuffle. The Cyclones finished 11th as a team with 49.5 points. Earl Hall took home the title at 133 at this year’s scuffle.

Session One
Day two started off sluggish for the Cyclones. Earl Hall, Gabe Moreno and Tanner Weatherman began the day still in the hunt for a championship, while Kyle Larson, Kyven Gadson, Marcus Harrington and Quean Smith did battle on the backside of the bracket.

After the morning session concluded, only Earl Hall and Tanner Weatherman would advance to the medal matches in the evening session.

Fifth seeded Earl Hall had a fantastic first session. He started the morning wrestling Virginia’s George DiCamillo, who beat Hall 9-2 earlier this season in Las Vegas. Hall got off to a hot start, going up 4-0 in the first. DiCamillo scrapped back and took an 8-5 lead into the third. Early in the third, Hall caught DiCamillo in a front headlock and the Homestead, Florida native was able to roll DiCamillo to his back to get the fall.

In the semi-finals, Hall was pitted against the number one seed and fifth ranked Jimmy Gulibon of Penn State. Hall had his offense working in this match as well, and a pair of great double-legs lifted Hall to a 5-2 decision to seal his spot in the 133 finals.

In the 174 quarterfinals, fourth seeded Tanner Weatherman wrestled John Eblen of Missouri. Eblen was not wrestling at his normal weight this weekend, coming down from 184 for the Scuffle. He got the better of Weatherman in this one, winning by a score of 7-3.

Weatherman went on to pin Army’s Jack Wedholm in the second period, but would fall to Kyle Crutchmer 3-1 to land in the 7th place medal match.

Session Two
Earl Hall and Michigan’s Rossi Bruno squared off in the 133 Southern Scuffle finals. Rossi is ranked No. 8 and was the three seed this weekend.

The match started off slow, with the match remaining scoreless after one. The two traded escapes to start the second and third periods, making it 1-1. Late in the third though, Bruno took a shot high on Hall, he missed.

Hall was able to defend it and land on top of Bruno to secure the takedown with under 30 seconds left. He was then able to tilt Bruno to grab a two-point near-fall to seal up the match. Bruno would eventually get to his feet, but that’s how it would end. Hall got the better of Bruno 5-2 to take home the title.

Tanner Weatherman took home seventh place at this year’s Southern Scuffle. He defeated Oklahoma State’s Jordan Rogers in S-V 1, 10-8.

Weatherman got off to a slow start, trailing by as much as 6-2 during the match. A late takedown in the second cut the lead 6-4 and Weatherman was able to ride him out to end the period.

He got a takedown early in the period and cut Rogers to make it 8-6. With time winding down, Weatherman took his shot. When there was only six seconds on the clock, he landed a single leg to tie the match and send it to sudden victory.

In the first period of extra time, Weatherman got an early takedown to cement his seventh place finish.
