MASON CITY – A fire caused damage to a fast food sandwich store in Mason City Monday, causing it to close.

The Subway store located at 421 South Illinois suffered an undetermined amount of damage Monday. Smoke coming from the building had been reported to authorities, who arrived and secured the premises.  Subway was not open at all Monday following the incident.

Burned up containers, racks, and other debris were visible behind the Subway store Monday night. Charred pavement and other substances were oozing on the ground.  A front window was boarded up.

There was no immediate word on how long the Subway store would be closed.

A coin laundry business located next door was open Monday night and appeared untouched by the disturbance.
