MASON CITY – Mason City Firefighters were called to the Kirk Apartments for a fire alarm Wednesday night, leading to a partial evacuation of the building.
There was a light haze of smoke on the first floor of the Kirk Apartments, 206 North Federal Avenue, leading residents to leave the building as firefighters and an ambulance made their way to the scene around 8:15 PM Wednesday.
The top two floors had a “light smell” but no smoke, it was said.
A resident told NIT that a cigarette butt had been tossed outside the back entrance to the building and had began smoldering, which lead to some smoke getting into the building. Afew residents milled about outside as firefighters cleared the scene and brought out heavy-duty fans to push the smoke away.
Residents soon made their way back inside the building.
