AMES – Iowa State beat Oakland Friday night 93-82 to win its 17th consecutive season opener, including the fifth in a row under coach Fred Hoiberg. The Cyclones were led by Georges Niang, who had a career-high 30 points, nine rebounds and five assists in the win. Niang’s 30 points were the most by a Cyclone in a season opener since Nov. 20, 2005 (Curtis Stinson, 35 vs. Mountain State).
The win was Iowa State’s 21st in a row at home against nonconference opponents, which ties for the third longest streak in school history.
The Cyclones are ranked No. 14 in the AP preseason poll, the highest preseason ranking since 1996-97 (9).
ISU had five players in double figures against the Golden Grizzlies. Bryce Dejean-Jones, the preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, recorded the first double-double of his career, grabbing 11 rebounds to go along with 20 points. Dustin Hogue (15), Monté Morris (14) and Naz Long (10) were also in double figures.
Iowa State hosts Georgia State, considered by many to be among the top mid-major teams in the country, Monday night at Hilton Coliseum in a nationally-televised contest.
