CHARLES CITY – The trial of a Charles City man accused of numerous charges of sexual abuse of a child has been postponed until next year.
Jeff Devries, age 50, has been charged by Floyd county prosecutors with five counts of sexual abuse in the second degree and five counts of indecent contact with a child. The crimes allegedly took place beginning in June of 2013, with the latest incident as late as August 1, 2014. He was to stand trial this week, but his lawyer asked for a continuance, and judge Dedra Schroeder granted it. Devries’ jury trial is now set for January 27, 2015.
Devries was arrested on August 7, booked, and released from jail under the supervision of the Iowa Department of Corrections as he awaits a trial. Earlier this month, his attorney objected to an application by the prosecution to allow the child alleged victim to submit depositions via closed-circuit television. The motion failed.
