NIACC, Iowa Lakes battle to 3-3 draw

MASON CITY – The NIACC men’s soccer team tied Iowa Lakes 3-3 in double overtime at its homecoming contest Saturday at the NIACC pitch.

NIACC tied the contest at 3-3 with a unassisted goal from freshman Oblayon Neymah with 14.6 seconds remaining in regulation.

The two teams played two 10-minute overtimes and neither team scored.

“Our courage and desire was fantastic to come back and not give up,” NIACC coach Jonathan Platt said.

Iowa Lakes (3-3-1 overall, 1-3-1 in the league) jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the second half with a pair of goals from Jose Rincon, who scored at the 26:56 mark of the first half and at the 43:00 mark of the second half.

“We really didn’t start well and gave up a soft goal,” NIACC coach Platt said. “It took us 20-30 minutes to get into the game.

“We tried to do things we haven’t tried to do all season and it got worse from there for about 45 minutes.”

NIACC (3-3-2, 2-0-2) trimmed the deficit to 2-1 with a goal from Rodrigo Galvan (his first of the season) at the 16:37 mark of the second half. Kevin Fortes tied the contest at 2-2 with 4:12 left in the contest.

The goal by Fortes was his team-leading ninth goal of the season.

“We just needed that little bit of belief to settle us down,” Platt said.

Iowa Lakes, over, regained the lead 25 seconds later on another goal by Rincon.

The game remained tied until Neymah tied the match with his third goal of the season with less than 20 seconds left in regulation.

NIACC returns to action Wednesday in an ICCAC contest at Marshalltown, which topped Scott CC 4-0 on Saturday. Marshalltown is 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the league.

Iowa Central, Iowa Western and NIACc do not have a loss in league play. Iowa Central is 3-0 in the league, Iowa Western is 3-0-1 and NIACC is 2-0-2.

“The biggest thing is even when you don’t play great, you still have to get something from the game,” Platt said, “and (Saturday) we did. We know we can play a lot better.”

Notes: NIACC, which started soccer in 2001, has a record of 114-114-12 … NIACC leads the all-time series against Iowa Lakes 8-3-1 …. Jonathan Platt is 1-3-1 all-time against Iowa Lakes.
