UPDATE: Motorcyclists pay price when teen driver fails to stop in time

logo-iowa-state-patrolNEW HAMPTON – A teen driver failed to stop in time when a vehicle in front of him made an abrupt stop, sending his vehicle into oncoming traffic.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, an accident took place Friday, August 1 at about 9:02 AM on Highway 63 and Mission Avenue, north of New Hampton.

Eighteen-year-old Eric Buckendahl of Fort Atkinson approached the intersection while traveling south when a vehicle in front of him slowed abruptly. Buckendahl swerved but still struck the vehicle, spinning his 2006 Chevy Equinox into the northbound lane. Two motorcyclists who were traveling in the northbound lane then smashed into Buckendahl’s Equinox. Fifty-four-year-old Mark Hill of Cameron, Missouri was ejected from his motorcycle and later pronounced dead. The second motorcyclist, 61-year-old Clyde Han, also of Cameron, Missouri, was injured.

Both Han and Buckendahl were transported to Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton for medical treatment.

The vehicle that Buckendahl rear-ended left the scene and police were searching for it.  On the afternoon of Tuesday, August 5, law enforcement announced that the driver who left the scene was located.  Wendy Razam Ruiz, Age 24 of New Hampton was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox.  No charges were announced.  The accident remains under investigation.

Are you kidding me, if you break the law and get caught, you get a ticket. And then complain about getting a ticket, because you broke the law. I really doubt that these two gentlemen in their fifties and sixties were riding crotch rockets. In a highway accident like this at highway speeds a helmet won’t help anyway. Try to picture yourself slamming into a steel wall at 55 mph. These guys weren’t breaking any laws.

I got a citation for failure to wear a seat belt and these guys go without a helmet, straddling a crotch rocket at 55 mph. Duhh. Reality check for sure.

Its not just young people I was in a accident where person over 50 blew stop sign and hit us. She was on gravel and we were on highway at speed of 55. Drinking age should be 18 I think. Because if u can fight for your country and die you should be able to have a beer. There are to many distraction with driving now days. Cell phones are deadly with drivers. Accidents are caused by ALL ages.
Hey phil guess what most of our military heros are under 26. Look at average age in the service you…

This tragic accident wasn’t caused by speeding motorcycles or loud exhaust pipes. It was caused by a teenager not paying attention to what he was doing, driving a 3600 pound killing machine. Again, two elderly people out enjoying a leisurely ride having it tragically cut short by someone not paying attention. What a shame….

Not paying attention probably means texting while driving.

I see motorcycle riders all of the time going 60 or 70 MPH up here in a 25 MPH zone. One of these days they are going to get splattered all over the street. Then some kook will say loud pipes could have prevented the act of stupidity. One guy on a Harley towing a beer barrel trailor goes by wide open all the time. The faster and louder they are the shorter the penis.

@Mojo-Up yours sissy.

This is terrible. I think seriously the driving age needs to be raised to 21. Young people are just too inexperienced, narcissistic, and distracted in life to be in command of 3000 lb hurling projectiles. As long as I’m at it, I’ll say the age to enlist in the military should also be raised to about 26. Drinking age to 26 also. Seriously, they’ll get over it. There maybe could be a weight class provision that restricts them to very small cars, mopeds, or motorcycles.

We think you should get a job.

@Philly-I doubt that will ever happen. Way to much money in it the way it is. The only way to make that happen is to get the insurance company’s pushing it.

And is that supposed to be some sort of insult? Guess what Mojo? Yeah you buddy, will also end up on some sort of fixed income, as an elderly man, and more than likely will make comments about life. LVS is retired, and this is what senior males are supposed to be doing: Discussing politics, life, philosophy. IN Ancient Greece, you’d be driven out of the polis, beaten with sticks if you ever insulted a fellow philosopher in such a manner. Now go find a goat and tend to it.

Mojo is part of the weekend troll unit. All they want to do is stir things up, start a fight or insult people. It’s because of them that I think we should ALL use at least our first name here.

I may legally change my name to Philosophus if I ever write that book I’ve been meaning to write. Bono, Sting, Socrates, Aristotle, Bjork, Dido, Philosophus…

🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

@Philly and Maybe-Thank you for your comments. The really good thing about people like Mojo and WilllBURRRR is someone like me will probably pinch their heads off along with their smart mouths. That is a good thing because I will still be around to collect the social security they never live to get.

We got your back LVS.

As I (and many, many others) have said, you just don’t get it.

Myself and so many others do not comment on here to “tear down the site”, just the opposite.
This site has great potential were it not for three things.

You three have created an environment that drives people away with your incessant derogatory comments to all that don’t agree with you, nonsensical blathering and outright hostility & threats.

Just look in the mirror to see what really hurts this site. It’s ugly.

@Ron-I don’t need to look in the mirror. I can see you trolls just fine right here. You do nothing but come on here to harass and try to intimidate people that are smarter and better than you will ever be. All three of us have been on here for a long, long time and we will still be here when you are gone. Someday real soon Matt is going to get tired of your crap and ban anyone who is not a subscriber.
