Algona police report variety of scam attempts

scam-alertALGONA – Late least week, the Algona police department wanted of a variety of scams that continue to plague residents.

Citizens in Algona are continuing to report to police suspected scams. Reportedly, the scams are arriving in a variety of ways, including forms of communication by phone, email, text message, certain websites, and regular mail.

“Almost always, it all comes down to the famous saying ‘if it appears to be too good to be true, it probably is,’” assistant chief of the Algona Police Department Kendall Pals told an Algona newspaper. “If the solicitor requests that you pay out of your own money to them to receive your large reward, that is assuredly a scam,” Pals said. “Never give out any personal information and always verify what you’re being asked or told. These predators can be very persistent and may present themselves in a variety of ways.”

Various law enforcement in the North Iowa area have been reporting scam attempts, as has the IRS and the FBI.
