NEWTON – At approximately 12:36 PM today, during a major thunderstorm, the Correctional Release Center at the Newton Correctional Facility experienced significant water damage to Living Unit – Dorm #4. This unit houses 54 minimum-live-out offenders. Water damage created a hazardous condition that required the evacuation of the unit.
With additional storms forecasted, as a precautionary measure, offenders were relocated to other rooms at the facility for temporary housing until the area is determined to be safe. No staff nor offenders were injured.
Visits and volunteer activities have been suspended until further notice.
