DES MOINES – Iowans who signed up for health care coverage through the Iowa marketplace are receiving notices that their insurance premiums will be going up substantially.
According to reports, the two health insurance companies offering coverage through the Affordable Care Act marketplace in Iowa are now sending notices to several thousand Iowans that their premiums could see a major increase next year. It has been reported that customers can expect up to 14.3% rate increases to their plans.
Some say that insurance premiums are rising because the insurers were not sure how to price their product because they didn’t know how many younger and healthier people would sign up.
Others say that the rising premiums are part of the overall problem with “Obamacare”: Less people insured, higher premiums, less coverage.
However, proponents of Obamacare say that the programs has reached its goal of insuring millions, and that the system – although not perfect – is an improvement.
At this time, the Health Insurance Marketplace is closed and not accepting new applications. The Obamacare website – HealthCare.gov – in under renovation and preparing for a new launch. The next open enrollment period begins next fall, November 15, 2014 – February 15, 2015 for coverage that would start as early as January 1, 2015.
