MC man accused of violating probation related to sex crime for fifth time

MASON CITY – A wanted sex offender was taken to the Cerro Gordo County Jail today.

Andrew Lloyd Spurgeon, age 21 with a last known address of Mason City, was booked into the jail at 4:52 PM. He is accused of violating his probation for the fifth time related to a felony third degree sexual abuse charge in which he pled guilty and received a deferred judgement. He is now being held on $10,000 cash-only bond.

Spurgeon was accused of harboring a 14-year-old female runaway in 2011. Mason City police learned about the incident when questioning a juvenile runaway who reported the sexual encounter with Spurgeon, who was 5 years older at the time. Spurgeon was sentenced to 50 hours of community service, three years of probation and was to register as a sex offender for 10 years as part of a deferred judgement. He is not listed on the Iowa sex offender registry, however.
