Ames police “saddened” and “disappointed” by VEISHEA riot

AMES – Police in Ames had their hands full with a roving band of young people Tuesday night, intent on causing destruction and mayhem and once again sullying the annual VEISHEA celebration.

Police joined many citizens in saying they are “both saddened and disappointed” in the actions of the people involved in what is being labeled as a riot on the Campustown area of the city.

“It is obviously unacceptable and not up to the standards of the City of Ames and Iowa State University,” police said of the lawlessness. “We would like to thank those of you who assisted us last night in many ways. We would also like to thank all of you who sent us a kind email or post of support.”

Iowa State President Steven Leath cancelled most VEISHEA activities Wednesday starting at 5pm.

“We have the rest of the week to get through,” police said.  “We will need everyone’s help to make the rest of the week and school year both trouble free and safe for all.”

Police went on to ask for cooperation and tips leading to the arrest of those who were causing the most trouble Tuesday night.

“Please, help us by being a part of the solution.  We are asking for the public’s help in identifying those responsible for criminal acts last night. If you have information, pictures, or videos, we would appreciate talking with you. Anyone with information relating to this incident is encouraged to contact the Ames Police Department at 515-239-5133 or the anonymous tip line, 515-239-5533.”
