MASON CITY – Heavy snow has returned to the North Iowa area.
One inch of snow per hour is expected across the region, tapering off by afternoon, with winds picking up. Blowing snow will again be a concern. Roads have become ice-covered and dangerous. Drivers should take extra precautions, as numerous accidents in recent weeks have been reported, some with fatalities.
Inside Mason City, roads are covered and slick. Cars are sliding and having difficulty stopping. Some intersections and main roads are plowed at this time but others are snowed-in from the plowing.

For years, I used logic to solve the problem of driveway clogging. I cleared a pocket along the curb line 20 feet before the approach started. By the time the plow reaches my drive, very little if any snow is left. Simple concept, great results.
Yesterday I watched as plow drivers were ‘trying’ to clear streets. The difficulties come from people who do not use common sense, and allow drivers to plow curb to curb (i.e. they insist upon parking on both sides of the street). This leaves but a narrow channel for everyone to traverse.
Some streets yesterday did not get plowed at all, since Street Department drivers could not get through thanks to people who cannot figure out simple winter parking.
Just be Mercy Hospital and the city plows will back up and push the snow out of the end of your driveways.

This winter is really starting to get on my nerves. Thought I saw twin girls standing at the end of my hall. ‘Bout ready to start drinking again!

The Shining.
It is about 20 minutes to 2:00 P.M. and I have not seen a plow all day. I know they are just waiting until I get my driveway plowed out so they can plow it back in. City taxes at work.
LVS’ I just heard on the scanner that the plows and sanders are on their way out now. They will be out until 7-8 tonight. You might want to wait because those plows careless.
I pay a guy to plow me out and I never know when he will come. Hopefully they plow the streets first.
I remember 3-4 years back I wrote a letter to Brent Trout about the plows plowing 5-10 ft of snow in my drive he pretty much told me to deal with it. But my main concern was if I had an emergency how would the EMT’s get up in my drive Trout didn’t seem to give a rats ass. After my complaint the plow drivers retaliated , honked and waved as they put more snow on my drive.
@Anonymous-I had the same problem. When I called the city it just got worse. It hasn’t been to bad this year because the snow has not been that deep and when they plow us back in we can just drive over it. I used to just throw it back in the street but I can’t do that any more. Last may I paid a guy $50 to plow me out and 5 minutes later the city completely plowed us back in. I had to pay another $20 to get another guy to open it up with a blower.
Oh, yet it’s alright for Harley riders with straight pipes to retaliate after someone who calls in to complain about their noise huh?
You freaks are all double standard hypocrites. As soon as it’s something that pisses you off, then all of a sudden you cry out that the city is a bully and retaliates.

I’m sorry LVS, was I speaking to you? Or was I speaking to the person who complained to his city officials and didn’t get anywhere? And did I send out a further broader message to any of the others out there who selectively get irritated at some things, but aren’t bothered by other things. For this reason that is why laws are put in place to protect the common peace and the common good. Police are actually supposed to abide by this philosophy, yet with Harley’s they somehow have looked the other way.
I’m glad someone else out there is frustrated. Maybe when the issue hits you, you won’t be mistreating me as bad as everyone has. All I have ever asked for was to abide by the laws of this land to protect the common good. I have also lobbied to change laws that I deem necessary to be changed. I’m doing everything correctly as you’re supposed to. And I can tell by your other comments, that you are starting to agree with my perspective of thinking. I knew going into this that it was going to be a long protracted effort, not something that would happen overnight. CHANGE TAKES TIME. It’s working LVS, and you know it is.
Of course a plow driver can make sure every driveway in town never gets any snow in them from the street. They just flip that “magic” switch on their dash and the snow evaporates every time they go past a driveway. Where do you think the snow from the street is supposed to go??? I imagine this only happens in Mason City too, because this is the only city in the US where it snows and people pay taxes! Get a grip people. You live in Iowa where it snows!
Where did you go to school. Every plow driver knows that all they have to do is change the angle of the plow and they will not throw snow in the drive. Think before you shoot off your mouth.
My sidewalk is closer to the road than normal, everytime the plows go by not only do they bury my drive they bury the sidewalk and then I get a warning from the city.
So I take it your have driven a City snow plow then? You have had to put up with people who can’t figure out the alternate side parking? The people who blow their snow back into the street, but can’t figure out why that is not allowed? The kind citizens who flip you the middle finger and call you every name in the book? You want the most thankless job around, then hop in one of those plows. Or maybe you’d like to have to fear for your life when people are too busy texting to notice the road construction signs and drive into your work zone and almost kill you. How about you hop into a ditch in water up to your knees in -20 weather and fix a broken water main? Maybe you can pick up that garbage can full of dog crap and maggots when it’s 95 degrees out and keep your lunch down? You want the most thankless jobs around, then become a City of Mason City employee!! You do get 25,000 supervisors who can tell you how to your job better though!! Who wouldn’t want that????
@class-that is BULL and you know it. Do not try to con me as I know most of the city workers and I know just how hard they work. They came by our house at 4:30 AM today and were going so fast they threw snow all the way to the sidewalk and plowed back in the corners that I paid to have cleaned out yesterday. Get off the crap, I have seen them in action for years and used to take pictures of four city workers standing around while one guy was working. All they have to do is change the angle of the plow and slow down and they know it.
And all they have to do is put quieter tailpipes on their bikes, and they know it.

Peter, you are fighting a culture,unions, a lifestyle. When the bikes come from the factory that way do you think they will quiet them down because of you? You would get more accomplished by spitting into the wind. If the city started fining them it would seem like discrimination and they would push back, since it would basically effect only the Harley’s.
First of all Mr. Brain Damage: THEY DON’T COME THAT WAY FROM THE FACTORY. They are modified with after market products. Many are offered and installed right at the Harley shop. Child molestation is a lifestyle too for some, doesn’t make it right. Robbing banks is a lifestyle also…doesn’t make it right. It’s only a matter of time before this ignorant population wakes up, and more importantly, the ignorant lawmakers who are sitting on their thumbs doing nothing while populations are menaced and harassed by these apes.
Sometimes it’s easy to use descriptions, especially when you see the long extended handlebars on some choppers. Makes me think of gorillas riding them. Actually, some of the guys probably think of themselves in that way, but nonetheless, I said I wouldn’t name call anymore and I caught myself so I apologize.
@Philly-the politicians are going to pat you on the head and tell you what a great citizen you are. Then they are going to do absolutely nothing except line up all their biker buddy’s to drive by your house and rev up the pipes. You will have no one to blame but your self because you rant against them all the time. You are going to make some enemy’s you really don’t want to piss off and accomplish nothing.
With this present bunch, what you wrote is probably true. It’s going to take citizens, and lots of them to come out of their shell to get any action. Even though I said I wouldn’t, I may attend one city council meeting and ask them to put it to the test by using the official City of Clear Lake letterhead to send out a questionnaire asking citizens how they feel about loud tailpipe noise and whether they want the city to do anything. For the cost of about $1000 the city can conduct its own poll and from there we can see more truthfully how the people feel.
Does that sound reasonable to you LVS?

Everyone knows that motorcycles and all vehicles manufactured in the United States are required to meet Federal EPA noise pollution standards off the assembly line. Everyone also knows by now, that when someone buys a motorcycle at Harley Davidson, the shop also sells aftermarket tailpipe products that make their cycles real loud. Screaming Eagle is one brand of tailpipes that are offered. This is well known #maybe, and you’re a bright boy, so I find it impossible to believe you don’t know this. You do, and you’re playing dumb, and so for that, I’ll get a bit mean, until you come clean and stop with all the b.s.. If LVS was a stand up guy, he’d chime in and confirm what I just wrote about factory pipes.
Now in the slim event that you really don’t know this #maybe, then truly my apologies. But you seem to possess enough ability to write and operate a computer, so how hard would it be for you to research a little bit on Google before making your comments? It sure would help the learning experience / flow for NIT readers to enjoy.

Riding a Harley, and knowing how they’re made are 2 different things. Your Harley probably wasn’t new, and had already been modified with loud pipes.
@Philly-you know what sounds even more reasonable is for you to get up a petition and take it around to all of your neighbors and even to the store with the pudgy manager and get people to sign it. If you find enough people who think the same as you (which I doubt you will) you can take the petition to the council and demand that they police chief do his job and stop the noise. It will be interesting to see if any more people will stick their necks out. I also think you can debate with maybe without making fun of the disabilities he received while defending our country. If he was injured it is very bad form on your part to insult him over it. Also, kind of childish. This is not a school yard playground.
