DES MOINES – Attorney General Tom Miller applauded CVS Caremark’s announcement Wednesday that it will stop selling tobacco products at its pharmacies, and urged other pharmacy retailers to do the same.
“I commend CVS for doing the right thing by pulling tobacco products from its store shelves,” Miller said. “This is a courageous corporate move that may result in some lost revenue, but it will save countless lives and improve the health of many, many people.”
Miller, who was a leader in the $206 billion, 25-year Master Settlement Agreement in 1998 between tobacco companies and 46 states, including Iowa, called on other retailers that operate pharmacies and also sell tobacco products to follow CVS’s lead.
“When you think about it, it seems rather absurd that a retailer sells a deadly product, and down the aisle also sells prescription drugs to help treat tobacco’s horrible side effects, like emphysema, heart disease and cancer,” Miller said. “What kind of message does it send when a pharmacy sells something that will kill you and then something else to help make you better?”
Miller also serves as a board member of the American Legacy Foundation, which is dedicated to preventing teen smoking and encouraging smokers to quit.
How long has this guy been Attorney General? Nothing against him, but I think it’s time for someone else to have a chance.
Ya, he sued tobacco telling us we needed the money for sick smokers and then spent the money on something else once we got it.
