ISU’s Kane named player of the week

logo_iowa_state_cyclonesAMES, Iowa – DeAndre Kane has been named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week after earning tournament MVP honors at the Diamond Head Classic last week. Kane is the fifth different Cyclone to earn Big 12 Player of the Week honors – the first time in conference history that one school has had five different student-athletes win the honor in the same season. West Virginia’s Nathan Adrian was the Phillips 66 Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.

Kane wins his first player of the week recognition after earning two newcomer honors earlier this year. The senior guard averaged 19.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in the final two games of the Diamond Head Classic, earning MVP honors after leading the Cyclones to the tournament title and the best start (11-0) in school history. He had a 15-point effort in the semifinals against Akron, grabbing 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Kane then added a 23-point, five rebound performance versus Boise State. In that game, he connected on 4-of-6 shots from 3-point range after entering the game with five field goals from beyond the arc for the entire season. He is one of two players nationally averaging at least 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Naz Long (Nov. 11), Melvin Ejim (Nov. 18), Dustin Hogue (Dec. 9) and Georges Niang (Dec. 16) have also been named player of the week for the Cyclones this season.

The Cyclones return to action Tuesday when they host Northern Illinois at 6 p.m. in their final Big 12 tuneup.
