MASON CITY – A Mason City man seems to have went on a crime spree on Mason City’s south side early Saturday morning.
According to police, Zachary James Kantaris, age 21, is in jail after crashing a stolen truck into a Mason City home and then fleeing the scene.
The trouble began sometime before 2:44 AM when police were called to the zero block of 23rd Street SW on a report that a truck had struck a home and then left the scene. A witness followed the truck to a residence just outside city limits on 34th Street SE and notified police.
Officers soon arrived at the residence and arrested Mr. Kantaris and took him to jail.
As officers investigated the full extent of the actions of Mr. Kantaris, more potential lawbreaking was discovered. Investigators uncovered that he had broken into Key Wholesale, located at 1136 South Carolina Avenue, and caused damage to several doors and windows and took a laptop computer owned by the business. Police further allege that Mr. Kantaris then went to the Alliant Energy Warehouse located at 622 15th Street SE where he entered an employee’s vehicle and then stole a pickup truck owned by Alliant Energy and drove it through a security gate, destroying it. He then drove the stolen truck to the 23rd Street residence and intentionaly crashed into the house twice and then fled the scene. The residence was occupied at the time of the incident but no one was injured.
Zachary Kantaris is now in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on $10,000 bond, charged with the following crimes:
– lst Degree Criminal Mischief, class C felony for intentionally damaging the residence
– lst Degree Theft, class C felony for the theft of the Alliant Energy truck
– 2nd Degree Criminal Mischief, class D felony for destroying Alliant Energy gate
– 3rd Degree Burglary, class D felony for the burglary to Key Wholesale
– 3rd Degree Burglary of a motor vehicle, an aggravated misdemeanor for breaking into the Alliant employee’s vehicle
SUBJECT IS INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY.

I would like to say that the above statements are false. Maybe people should get facts straight before they go off on some website anonymously. Most that have commented need to learn how to spell. I know the family personally and drugs weren’t involved, but that was a cute effort to try and bring up the past. The father doesn’t make money on the side and the mother works full time, sometimes 2 jobs. Once again these are facts that ignorant people like yourselves tend to miss. Yes he has made many mistakes but he’s human. Next time before you write take in consideration that there is a family that has done nothing wrong that you are attacking with your rude comments.
you say you know the family personally and you say that drugs were not involved go take a look at charges from today he just had a court hearing today and it looks like possession of a controlled substance was added to his charges and just tacked on another $5,000 for his bail so now it’s totally a $40,000 what I don’t understand is nobody’s even thinking about the family that was in the house there’s kids in the house and what if one of those kids would have got injured? we would be talking about a whole different story if that would have happened I love how people wanted to defend criminals all the time this is not something anyone needs to be taken lightly what he did was stupid and wrong. Mommy and daddy and grandma need to stop bailing this kid out before he kills someone or himself. This kids dad has worked the system for years and lived off his parents. Not a very good example for this young man. Time for this kid to start paying the price for his crimes.

Hey Dick, and you are one for sure, he was done using the drugs apparently when he stole the truck. There were no drugs in the vehicle he stole. And his bond has been increased with additional charges.

Folks, we have to realize we have a big Meth problem in Mason City. I am not saying that is what is going on in this case but it sounds like it. It is hitting all kids in the community, no matter how good the parenting is when they are growing up. Once these kids do Meth once, they can’t stop, it is just that simple. I see he is now charged with OUI as well and the bond has increased to $35,000. I don’t think it was alcohol, just my opinion.
I need to expand, and take my hat off to Mr. Foster when speaking of this meth problem today at the forum. He stepped up and talked about the African American people coming into Mason City from Detroit and Chicago and driving the town down the drain. (My words, not his.) He stated that he didn’t want them here either and the only reason they flock here is Iowa title 8 that is not regulated for out of state people. He stated that the benefit was not available to people in Michigan or Illinois.
I applaud Mr. Foster for this statement and I would ask all of you to contact your state representatives, Sharon Steckman and Amanda Reagan to see what they can do about this huge problem in Mason City.
@Dick Rahlf-I think he means section 8 which is welfare and title 19. Under Iowa Law a person is eligible for this as soon as they take up residence in the state. So, they can come here in the morning, rent a shack in the afternoon and be eligible the next day for full benefits. A lot of them do that and then head back to Illinois because we pay more than there. I have relatives over there that tell me there are signs up in the Chicago area telling them to come here because we pay more and the living is cheaper. I am told the slum lord in Northwood put op signs in Illinois and that is why they all moved up there. Not all are bad folks but some of them are. Some are just looking for a safer life but the scum will always follow looking for a easy mark.
