Peter Children: The chickens have come home to roost

Op-ed by Peter Children –

Who amongst us could or would deny this man his just deserts? His own day in court is long overdue….and I might add, well deserved.

It was with reckless abandonment that those who we voted into office, and others whom they consequently appointed have driven this bus into a ditch that could lead directly to making this city unable to buy insurance….or at best, drive the premiums through the roof.

There was a settlement paid to a church that was maligned by the Chief of Police, we paid out another settlement to young lady who was serving as a police officer….I am certain there were others we may never heard of….but now get ready this suit will resemble a nuclear warhead aimed directly at City Hall with fallout that could effect your property tax.

When Bookmeyer first took office one of his first measures was to shut down the HR office; he didn’t come from here, he could give a rats ass about those living here…..remember he was being feted by the cocktail crowd not those who punched time clocks. His enormous ego fueled by copious amounts of alcohol along with suddenly finding himself as the C.E.O. of a city of this size from being a frequent passenger in the “back” seat of the police cruisers in Clinton Iowa to now appointing the new Chief of Police here, was just a bit more than this man could consume in such a short time.

He wrestled control; of the city from the administrator Trout without any resistance what so ever. Remember we have a “weak” mayoral form of government in this city and Bookmeyer encroached into territory he did not belong. He literally drove the City Attorney out of town with his frequent demands that his decisions be affirmed as law. Then he never replaced the position.

This is never ending, whatever he wished for this inept council gave to him on a silver plate; look how they treated the homeowners in Forest Park. In truth the city should have negotiated a far better deal than what they were offered. While the hospital supports the city in many ways, it is those living here and in the surrounding area that in turn support the hospital with their patronage as well….its a two way street, but Bookmeyer failed to recognize the other side of the coin. And their Ward representative Hickey sat mute…then vote against his constitutes. Hickey has been quote as saying “you can’t fix stupid.” Who would know better then him?

Now it’s lunch time in City Hall….and Lionel is going to eat Bookmeyer’s lunch along with those sitting at that table that never says no.
