Detroit CBP seizes undeclared ammunition from trusted traveler

DETROIT – U.S. Customs and Border Protection, (CBP) at the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit announces the seizure of 3,450 rounds of ammunition on September 11, from a traveler enrolled in CBP’s NEXUS trusted traveler program.

The man, a 36 year old citizen of Canada, entered through the NEXUS lane and told the CBP officer that he had no items to declare. The man was referred for a secondary inspection where during a search of his vehicle, several boxes of ammunition were found concealed underneath the front passenger seat floor mat. A total of 3,450 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition were seized for failure to declare.

“The trusted traveler program allows low risk, frequent border travelers benefits not available to others”, says David Beculheimer, acting port director. “There is zero tolerance for any violations and those who attempt to circumvent the rules will be removed from the program,” said Beculheimer.

The man was questioned by investigators from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and released. He was issued a civil penalty and removed from the NEXUS program.

The NEXUS program allows pre-screened travelers expedited processing by United States and Canadian officials at dedicated processing lanes at designated northern border ports of entry, at NEXUS kiosks at Canadian Preclearance airports, and at marine reporting locations.

22L.R. are almost impossible to find. I have been looking for months. Everytime the stores get them in people are standing in line waiting for them. I know they have had that problem in Alaska for years and of course in Canada with their laws it is worse than impossible.

last week walmart had 2 bricks of 555 each for 24.00, I have more than I need so I didn’t buy them.

@maybe-I have looked at Walmart every week for at least a year and have never been able to find any. I had the same luck at Fleet Farm. It must be real hard to sell rifles when you can’t get ammo.

same here but last Thursday night they had 2 bricks.

Stealing 22 LR now is almost as bad as stealing gold.

How terrible, what was he going to do with those dreaded 22’s…

So it is OK to break the law if they are only .22 caliber? Where is that exception written?

I suppose that like speeding because you are late for work is OK as well?
